down and dirty on this place they call Quartzsite.
either love it or hate it... But there is a reason why thousands of snowbirds
land in this mecca... for the winter. It's cost effective and everyone
loves that. Follow along in my next posts as I expose the in and outs of
Q where both the cost conscious and the affluent come together to find
peace and calm in the desert. Well for the most part the snowbirders
do.... but not so much the locals who have made a shambles out of their
local government. Is the city the laughing stock of small town America
or what? We have never held back on telling you the real scope on
what is behind the scenes here.
landed in the La Posa LTVA as our first choice was taken . Not to worry
as there is lots of room in the BLM for all.
a schathing report on the restaurant scene we have found.
go out to eat untill you read this.
of the mainstays of Friday was going to the Grubstake for The Big
Fish Fry. If you have ever been to Q you remember just how good it
was. All you could eat deep fried Cod and a huge mess of fries and
not anymore.... The Grubstake is a place to avoid in our opinion
as we feel the NEW owners (see the above sign) have not yet understood
their customers and what kind of food and service they should provide.
So for now ...it makes our list of where you should NOT expect good
service... Or good food. The new owners who have no clue about
anything in our opinion ...
off we arrived about 5:30 PM early for us as we wanted to get in before
the late rush. Well we got lucky and got seated without much of a
wait. That was the only thing that went right. We only saw
one server for the whole place. She took our order and we waited
and waited after like an hour the customers around us were talking to each
other wondering what was going wrong as the food just wasn't showing up.
And that some people were getting served who came in later than us. That
got the eyebrows raised. We almost walked out but stayed and the
food did come. Did I say above we excepted cod fish... nope pollock was
what they were serving. Not as good as in our opinion. And a whole new
style of breading. Not as good as what the Grubstake had been noted for.
Our food was hot but others were complaining theirs was cold. How do you
eat cold fish and chips. When we went to pay we let the cashier/owner
know our dissatisfaction. She was unaffected or apologetic.
But replied snarley about the customers "That they all showed up
at once". I informed her she hadn't seen anything as it wasn't even
the busy season yet.
and not to mention the special was $10.75 and the all you can eat was removed
from the offering.
other restaurants that we see signs for around town say Fish Fry for $7.50
line the Old Grubstake is gone and the new unimproved is here. And
not for long if they don't get their act together real fast. Word
of mouth will travel fast in the RV circles and people will go somewhere
else. Sorry Grubstake if your gunna play the game you better have your
act together first. What was the name of the cable TV show that came in
and saved restaurants by telling how bad they sucked and what they had
to do to survive. Call the producer of "Restaurants Impossible" quick.
cross posted to Yelp.
smiles and may the sun shine on you if you are in Q as like everywhere
it has been kind of COLD here...
comes word a weather watch for freezing temps Monday night. Happy
Cold New Year.
to be a propane heater dealer this year in Q. We are thinking about one
but have to do research on what kind to buy. You figure things like
this out and then forget which one was the kind to get. So back to Google...
Then go around and find the best price here in Q as there are dealers on
every corner. Time consuming... but what else do I have to do as
I like to say I'm stranded in Q while Terry does his thing at the rock
forgot about the last post about Bubble Lights.
But low and behold a UPS
package showed up at the Rock Club here in Quartzsite and Terry brought
this home to our boondocking site in the BLM to me and said Happy
Belated Christmas present. So I was confused until I opened a box with
3 of these strings it it. The first thing I said was where is the tree
to put them on. Might just clip them on the canopy outside.
I need to see them bubble no mater what... Ops take a good look at the
above picture... notice the first one has no fluid in it as it is
the RV packed up for heading to Q.
that time of year again, we're heading to Quartzsite, AZ for a month
or so of boondocking in the BLM. Actually the plan is to go for January...
come back for the Tucson Gem shows and our teeth checkups (leaving the
RV over there)... and head back for the rest of Febuary or more.
is dry camping with no hookups... For many years we spent the entire winter
season living off the grid there. We have that down to a science. How we
do it is all spelled out in our blog site in past posts.
that we have our winter vacation property in the eastern part of the state
we only get back for the prime season.
would just as much like to stay at our winter property but Terry loves
to meet up with his rock club friends and get some quality time in at the
countries largest Gem and Mineral Club where he used to teach his skills.
we are going and I know I will like it also... Taking lots of firewood
for campfires and GOING CAMPING...
are a little late this year getting to Q as we have been doing the dentist
thing (my crown) and Terry had a heart treadmill test with a sonogram heart
scan before and after and all turned out great. Now this is truly the best
Christmas present we could receive.
usual I plan on posting many blog updates while in Q like I have done in
years past. I tend to tell like I see it.
good with the ugly. That they like to say... "Q where you either love it
or hate it".. BUT you owe it to yourself to try it at least once visit
to find out. If you think Q is too upscale you can always go to CA
and check out Slab City. Just kidding....
you remember these... One of the best things about Christmas I remember.
They just made the tree (we always did have real tree back then) and looking
at them was a joy watching the bubbles go up the tube... back in the 60s
there wasn't much under the tree, or Santa gifts hiding in the closet.
Living on a farm in rural Iowa. (Only looking back do I realize how
poor we were). I told Terry how much I loved them and he just found
a site that had them for 1/2 off. Next year we will have a tree with them
on it. Might not be a real tree as we will be in AZ but still if I live
so long I will have my bubble lights again. Joy to you and yours... Did
you have bubble lights?
is one of the special moments of Christmas I remember... As we get older
we cherish these memories.
the baby boomers have to say good-by to their parents as times moves on...
they never thought these times would happen. But it does. This is the time
of year where so many are depressed over the loss of a loved ones and may
not have close family ties anymore. Dysfunctional families ae not uncommon.
in this country was structured around small rural communities where everyone
knows each other. No so much anymore. People get left behind
in all walks of life.
you and yours is doing good as a family give thanks... and if you
can reach out to someone who you may think may not be as fortunate,
or you might think may be alone or lonely, do call or reach out to them.
Just a call to say Merry Christmas asking what they are doing will mean
so much. I can attest to this I spent several years so very alone
before I met my partner.
typing this chokes me up...
last statement is if you can think of anyone who may be alone... or lonely.
Please reach out to them... Share your love.
them into your home to share the joy with your family. You
will feel the joy more than they will... you can be assured. Remember giving
is is the best joy you can receive.
Later from the desert in western AZ
